In April 2025 Beit Halochem UK, welcomed Aaron Bours to the UK to share his remarkable story of bravery and resilience with the Anglo Jewish community. Aaron, 34, from Great Neck, New York, served in the Givati Brigade and was severely injured in Gaza during Operation Swords of Iron. After rushing back to Israel from a conference in Las Vegas on October 7, 2023, he fought alongside his unit until November 14, when he was shot in both legs while trying to rescue his officer, Omri David Z”L, near an UNRWA school.
Airlifted to Sheba Medical Centre by the elite 669 unit, Aaron underwent critical surgeries to save his shattered legs, narrowly avoiding amputation. His recovery involved five months of intensive rehabilitation at Sheba’s “Returning to Life” ward and ongoing therapy at Beit Halochem. Throughout his gruelling journey, Aaron’s determination inspired many, and he now serves as an ambassador for Beit Halochem, sharing his story with international audiences. It was an honour for Beit Halochem UK to host Aaron over Yom Hazikaron.
Finchley Federation Synagogue, organised a special event for Beit Halochem UK following their communities partnership with the charity through their 2024 Kol Nidrei Appeal.
At Mill Hill Shul’s annual memorial service, Aaron captivated over 250 attendees with his powerful story of survival, and also lit a memorial candle in memory of those who have sacrificed their life protecting the State of Israel. The evening also featured moving words from Dame Maureen Lipman and performances by the Mill Hill Synagogue Adult Choir and the Immanuel College Prep School Choir. .
Youth engagement lies at the heart of Beit Halochem UK’s mission. During his visit, Aaron spoke at two powerful Yom HaZikaron ceremonies: the annual Immanuel College Tekes and at the Independent Jewish Day School (IJDS).
The charity was also invited to address a gathering of students under the Etgar banner.
